The Devil's Splash is now the highest waterfall in Bulgaria - 1

The ranking of the highest waterfalls in Bulgaria was rearranged after scientific geologists began to describe and study them, broadcast BNT

It turns out that first place goes to the Devil's Sprinkler, not the Paradise Sprinkler. The waterfalls are measured with precise equipment for the first time under a special scientific project.

Until now, no one has studied Bulgaria's waterfalls, there is no register of them, and their exact number is not known. Our team participated in the measurement of the Gorica waterfall.

At the foot of the northern slope of Rila, above the village of Ovchartsi, is another, the 25th waterfall, which they have to describe. Gorica waterfall. It is 39 meters high, according to the nameplate. It is not one of the big ones, but it definitely falls into the waterfall category. Where a redefinition is required, because of the complete chaos in their titling.

"Because there are waterfalls that are almost rapids of the order of a meter or two, but in principle we have estimated that waterfalls of 3 meters upwards can already be assumed to have a water fall of the stream. And we just need to estimate that we will be above 30 degrees", says Prof. Borislav Alexandrov - lecturer in geodesy at UASG.

The upper edge of Gorica is quite inaccessible here, so the special alpine skills of the mountain guide in the group are required. For the more precise measurement, he will have to put a stock up there.

"One of the most important things when shooting is to have a clear line of sight to the top and bottom of the falls We need to put a total station or a laser range finder. Here is an example of a laser range finder, and a total station is something much larger. It ties everything to GPS coordinates", explained Momchil Tsvetanov - mountain guide.

Besides the chaotic claims due to the lack of criteria for a waterfall, geologists encounter huge differences between the claimed and actual heights. So the rearrangement in the ranking of the first is quite serious.

"What is widely known by people is that the Paradise Sprinkler is the highest - 124.60 m. It turned out that the Devil's Sprinkler on the north side of Botev Peak is 202 and a half meters. The Vidim sprinkler also turned out to be higher than 159 meters, the Vrachanska Skaklya turned out to be 143. They were not measured in the precise way that we guarantee," said Assoc. Borislav Aleksandrov - lecturer in geodesy at the UASG.

The end of the survey may also clarify some total number of waterfalls. But this also turns out to be a rather complicated question.

"Hundreds, in Bulgaria there are hundreds, but a very large part of them are drying up. We try to work on those that are non-drying - year-round", said Prof. Borislav Alexandrov.

And Gorica already has precise measures. 34 meters. But before and after it there are two more waterfalls - respectively - 5 and 10 meters. Whether they will collect them or not - the hard word will be the geomorphologists.
