In India, huge crocodiles took over the city of Vadodara in the state of Gujarat due to the flooding of the Vishwamitri River, writes The Hindu (“The Hindu”), quoted by dariknews.bg.

Heavy rains in the region in late August led to a local dam overflowing and flooding. The river flooded the streets of the city, and dozens of reptiles also invaded with the water. In total, the Vishwamitri River is home to around 440 crocodiles. At least 24 of them were found in residential areas of Vadodara.

“The smallest crocodile we rescued was half a meter long, and the largest was 4.2 meters. He is caught near the river. Then the residents told us about another huge crocodile. And two more — about three meters long — were caught on Thursday,” said forest department inspector Karansin Rajput. He noted that there are no recorded crocodile attacks on people in the city. Rajput explained that crocodiles do not usually hunt humans as they prefer to feed on fish and animal carcasses that fall into the water. A video in which a crocodile ate a dog in the streets of the flooded city was distributed on the network.

The official also said that apart from the huge reptiles, 75 other animals, including snakes, two large tortoises weighing around 40 kilograms and a spiny pig, were removed from the streets of Vadodara.

As the water level in the Vishwamitri has now receded, the captured animals are beginning to return to their natural habitat. Earlier it was reported that in Indonesia a crocodile attacked a 54-year-old woman who was swimming in a river. Her remains were found in the reptile's belly.
