The remains of a missing fisherman have been found in a crocodile in Australia, the Daily Sun reported.

Kevin Darmody, 65, disappeared on Saturday, August 2, while fishing with friends in the Kennedys Bend area, a known habitat for saltwater crocodiles in North Queensland. After a two-day search, police euthanized two large reptiles measuring 4.1 and 2.8 meters long. Human remains were found in the stomach of one of them.

“This is a tragic end“, police said, noting that Darmody was an experienced fisherman and a respected member of the local community. His friends said they heard a scream and a loud splash, but did not see the attack.

Crocodile attacks are rare in the region: only 13 deaths have been recorded since 1985. Since a hunting ban in 1974, the population of the reptiles in Queensland has grown from five to 30,000 individuals.

The authorities are conducting a program to catch “problem crocodiles“ in areas dangerous to people.
