Briton Ethel Caterham - the world's oldest woman - celebrated her 116th birthday today, AFP reported, quoted by dariknews.bg, referring to the nursing home where she lives.

Born on August 21, 1909 in a village in Hampshire, southern England, Caterham became the world's oldest woman in early May after Brazilian nun Ina Canabaro Lucas died at the age of 116.

Ethel Caterham lives in a nursing home in Surrey, a county south of London.

"Ethel has again decided not to give interviews, preferring to spend the day in peace with her family to can enjoy the moment", said a spokesperson for the nursing home.

The centenarian and her family are grateful for all the kind messages and interest shown in her, the spokesperson added.

Formally, Ethel Caterham is the last living subject of King Edward VII, who held the British throne until his death in 1910.

Caterham is also the oldest British woman of all time, according to the Oldest in Britain database. Last year, she received a congratulatory letter from King Charles III.
