Defending champion Max Verstappen finished ahead of McLaren and will start the sprint race before the US Grand Prix from pole position. The Dutch Red Bull driver made a lap in 1:32.143 minutes on the 5.513-kilometer track in Austin, Texas, BTA reported.
Verstappen was the last with a flying lap of the US track and overtook Lando Norris by 0.071 seconds. The leader in the drivers' standings Oscar Piastre finished third, 0.380 seconds behind the world champion.
Nico Hulkenberg, who was second in the only free practice of the day, led Kick Sauber to fourth position, and Singapore Grand Prix winner George Russell ranked the leading Mercedes car in fifth place. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton qualified eighth, while his teammate Charles Leclerc finished tenth.
Piastri failed to reach the podium in Singapore and Norris is now 22 points behind in second place. Verstappen is 63 points behind in third. The sprint race before the US Grand Prix is scheduled for tonight at 8pm Bulgarian time, with the official start on Sunday at 10pm.
