Thomas Muller will face Lionel Messi in the final match for the title of the American Major League Soccer, BTA reports. This comes after Vancouver Whitecaps and Inter Miami won their respective conference final playoffs. Muller reached the championship match with Vancouver after a 3-1 away win against San Diego, securing their first Western Conference title. Miami won the Eastern Conference after a 5-1 victory over New York City.
The final will be played in Miami on December 6, with the hosts gaining home-field advantage thanks to their better record in the regular season. This will be the first MLS title final for both clubs.
The match will bring together two football legends - the first meeting between Muller and Messi since Bayern Munich faced Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League in 2023, and their first final since the 2014 World Cup, when Germany defeated Argentina in Rio de Janeiro.
Muller has won five of their six meetings at club level, including Bayern's 8-2 rout of Barcelona in 2020.
Messi, who joined Miami in 2023, has already won the League Cup and the Supporters' Shield, but has never reached the MLS final before.
In his first season in North America, Muller has already won the Canadian Championship with Vancouver.
In the Eastern Conference final, Tadeo Allende scored a hat trick and Lionel Messi contributed his seventh assist as Inter Miami crushed visiting New York City 5-1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In the Western Conference title game, Brian White scored two first-half goals as Vancouver Whitecaps beat San Diego 3-1.
