Algerian boxer Iman Khalif, whose participation in the Olympics was marred by controversy over her gender, won gold in Paris, NOVA reported.
In a contested final clash of the women's 66kg boxing tournament, she defeated China's Yang Liu on points by unanimous decision.
Khalifa is the first Olympic boxing champion from an African country.
The 32-year-old Asian tried to counter the Algerian, but she delivered heavier and more accurate shots. And the hall was filled with her compatriots who chanted her name from the beginning to the end of the match. On Tuesday, she won her semi-final against Thailand's Janjaem Suvanapheng, advancing her to the final.
Thus, the athlete won the seventh Olympic boxing medal in the history of Algeria, the first since 2000, as well as the first in the history of the nation in women's boxing.
Khalif won her first bout of the tournament after her opponent Angela Carini of Italy bowed out of the match in tears after just 46 seconds in the ring. The Italian woman said that she was hit too hard. Later it became clear that she would be paid a premium like an Olympic champion.
