Aston Villa won over Manchester City 2:1 in the first match of the 17th round of the English Premier League. The goals for the Birmingham team were scored by John Duran in the first half and Morgan Rodgers after the break, with the champions only reaching an honorary goal by Phil Foden in the added time of the match, BTA reported.
The problems for the "citizens" continue, as they have already lost nine of their last 12 matches, and they have not suffered so many defeats in 107 matches before. Aston Villa could have opened the scoring early in the match, but City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega deflected the ball into the post after a header by Pau Torres.
However, in the 16th minute, the hosts were already leading the score, with Duran shooting past the goalkeeper after an assist from Rodgers. Duran also scored early in the second half, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
In the 65th minute, Rodgers made it 2-0 with a diagonal shot between several opponent defenders. In the third minute of added time of the match, Foden scored his first Premier League goal of the season.
With the success, Aston Villa overtook Manchester City in the standings and are now in fifth place, having lost at home in eight consecutive matches. Pep Guardiola's team is in sixth place, but could fall even lower after all the matches in the round are played.
