Real Oviedo won promotion to La Liga for the 2025/26 season after triumphing in the final play-off against Mirandes. Veteran Santi Cazorla led his teammates, who prevailed in the second leg of the “Carlos Tartiere“ with 3-1 after extra time. The first leg at “Municipal de Anduva“ ended 1-0 for Mirandes. The second leg ended 2-1 in regular time, but Oviedo managed to score in extra time and with an aggregate score of 3-2, they reached a place in the elite after having to wait almost a quarter of a century, BTA reported.
The celebration was huge after the final whistle, and the match itself was attended by officials such as Fernando Alonso, who had not been to a match for the team since 2001, his last appearance in the elite.
Mirandes took the lead in the score in the 16th minute, when Joaquín Panicelli scored from close range with a header.
In the 39th minute, Oviedo equalized after a well-taken penalty by Santi Cazorla. Seven minutes after the restart, Ilias Shaira was accurate and made a complete turnaround for 2-1.
Oviedo scored a decisive goal in the 13th minute of the first extra time. Substitute Francisco Portillo sent the stands into raptures. The hosts returned to La Liga after a 24-year wait.
At the end of the match, David Costas of Oviedo and Unai Egilus of Mirandes were sent off.
