Survey: Most Germans fear Russian attack on NATO - 1

Most Germans fear a potential Russian attack on NATO after drones entered Polish airspace, according to a survey published today, cited by DPA.

According to the survey, conducted at the request of the "Bild" newspaper, 62% of the 1,002 people surveyed said they feared an attack on NATO countries such as Poland and Lithuania, while 28% said they had no such concerns. Ten percent of those surveyed said they were unsure how to answer.

These concerns were heightened after drones entered Polish, and therefore NATO, airspace earlier this week, some of which were shot down by the Polish Air Force and NATO allies.

Military circles believe it is unlikely to have been a coincidence, DPA notes. It is not yet clear whether the drones were programmed to hit targets on NATO territory or whether the idea was a provocation or a test of NATO air defenses.

The cited survey also shows that most Germans support the introduction of even stricter economic sanctions against Russia. Forty-nine percent of respondents said that all gas and oil supplies from Russia to the European Union should be immediately stopped, 33% said they approved of continuing supplies, 11% said they were unsure about the issue, and seven percent said it did not matter.
