The US State Department has approved the possible sale of air-to-air missiles AMRAAM (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) and related equipment to the Netherlands for a total of $570 million.

This was announced by the Pentagon's Foreign Security Cooperation Agency, which is responsible for the sale of military equipment and weapons abroad under intergovernmental contracts.

As noted in the statement, the Netherlands had previously requested the purchase of 232 AMRAAM missiles and eight guidance systems from the United States. The statement claims that the sale of these weapons to the Netherlands "will contribute to achieving US foreign policy and national security objectives" by strengthening the defenses of a NATO ally.

The agency believes that the potential deal “will enhance the Netherlands' ability to respond to current and future threats“. However, it is confident that the sale of the missiles will not change the military balance of power in the region and “will not require the deployment of additional U.S. government personnel or contractors“.
