UN Security Council to vote on Gaza ceasefire resolution - 1

The UN Security Council will vote on Thursday on a resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all hostages. The document expresses alarm over a recent report of famine among the Palestinian population, as well as the expanding Israeli offensive in Gaza City, the Associated Press reported, quoted by News.bg.

UN diplomats say the United States is likely to veto it, as it has done on similar resolutions over the past year, including the last one in June.

The resolution, drafted by the 10 Security Council members elected to two-year terms, focuses on the “deepening suffering“ of Palestinian civilians in the nearly two-year conflict in Gaza.

The document also recalls demands from previous resolutions, including the release of all hostages held by “Hamas“ and other groups since the October 7, 2023, attack in southern Israel that triggered the war.

The United States argues that such ceasefire demands are not directly related to the release of hostages and could embolden “Hamas“.
