I firmly believe that decisive action on our part would lead to a turning point in the war in Ukraine, said the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen today before the weekly meeting of the European Commissioners in the presence of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, BTA reported.
Preserving peace has always been a key task of the EU. Ukraine continues to hold the battlefield and has almost lost no territory this year, in the last 1,000 days Russia has captured only one percent of Ukrainian land, she added.
The economic pressure on Russia is increasing, inflation is 17 percent, EU sanctions are working, Von der Leyen pointed out. We need to increase pressure on Moscow, we have proposed additional sanctions, we need to expand military aid to Ukraine, the EC President urged.
Von der Leyen announced that the EC would propose to quickly provide protection against drones on the eastern flank. A joint European response is needed, we will propose immediate action to develop the wall against drones, she added.
Rutte pointed out that the EU and NATO have excellent cooperation. According to him, the alliance is still assessing the drone incidents in Denmark, but Russia's responsibility has been established for the cases in Poland and Estonia. Rutte did not specify whether these incidents were the result of deliberate or irresponsible actions.
