The drones spotted over Munich airport on Saturday evening were military reconnaissance drones, the newspaper „Bild“ claims, citing its own information.

„In Munich, there was talk of military reconnaissance drones“, the newspaper reports.

A police helicopter unsuccessfully searched for the person who operated them, the newspaper adds, citing a classified report by the German Federal Police.

On Thursday evening, German air traffic control restricted flights at Munich airport for several hours due to several sightings of drones of unknown origin. According to “Bild“, drones also flew over the “innovation center“ of the German Bundeswehr at Erding Airport near the city.

On Saturday evening, Reuters reported that Munich Airport had suspended flights for the second time in 24 hours due to the presence of a drone. On Saturday morning, the airport announced the resumption of flights. According to tabloid Bild, the second incident led to the diversion of 23 flights and the cancellation of 12 flights to Munich, as well as the delay or cancellation of 46 departing flights from the airport, affecting approximately 6,500 passengers.

Bild reported on August 8 that the Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskräfte der Kriminalamt) had identified 270 incidents involving drones at military bases and critical infrastructure sites in the first three months of 2025. According to the report, military facilities were the main target, with 117 incidents reported. German police recorded 88 incidents over energy infrastructure sites, mostly drone overflights of liquefied natural gas terminals.
