The war in Ukraine could have ended long ago if the European Union had put as much effort into achieving peace as it is currently supporting the conflict.
“If the European Union had put as much effort into achieving peace as it is currently supporting this war in Ukraine, this war would have ended long ago“, Fico said on the O 5 minut 12 program on Sunday.
He noted that the goal of his government is to end the conflict in Ukraine as quickly as possible.
“This war should have ended long ago. Why is it still going on? Because someone is supporting it. This war could have ended three months after it started, but someone said: no, no, no,“, Fico noted.
In late July, Fico said that the West had hoped to use Ukraine to weaken Russia, but it had not succeeded and would not succeed.
In January, Fico noted that the signing of a peace agreement in Ukraine had been thwarted under pressure from Western politicians shortly after the conflict began in 2022. According to the Slovak prime minister, the conflict had left Ukraine in a “terrible state“ and forced it to rely on help “from all over the world“.
Fico also previously stated that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, shortly after the conflict in Ukraine began, had put pressure on the Ukrainian leadership not to sign the agreement with Russia. This agreement, according to Fico, guarantees Ukraine a European perspective and military neutrality.
