About 5,400 residents in 24 settlements in Russia's Belgorod region are still without electricity after attacks by Ukrainian drones, the region's governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, announced on "Telegram", quoted by TASS and Reuters, BTA reported.

Power has been restored to 34,000 consumers. Repair work continues, airports whose work was suspended have resumed their work.

A total of 40 social facilities in the Belgorod region have been protected with an anti-drone net, using 187,000 square meters of protective material, TASS added, citing the regional authorities' press service.

Earlier, Russia said it had intercepted 251 Ukrainian drones that night, 40 of which were over the Crimean peninsula annexed by Moscow, Agence France-Presse recalls. This is an unusually massive offensive - usually in the strikes that the two sides exchange, Kiev's forces use dozens of drones, often aimed at Russian energy facilities, the agency notes.

For its part, Moscow has stepped up strikes on Ukraine's power grid, which has raised concerns about a campaign aimed at plunging the country into darkness as winter approaches. She tried to do something similar in 2024, AFP notes.
