The phased introduction of the new European Union Entry/Exit System (EES) begins today, intended for third-country nationals entering the Schengen area for a short-term stay - 90 days within any 180-day period, BNR reported.

Within a six-month transitional period, i.e. until April 9, 2026, all external borders of the EU will be equipped with the technology that replaces the current physical stamping of passports with electronic records.

The system will collect and register passport and biometric data (photo and fingerprints), as well as the dates of entry and exit.

Only rapid automated checks will be carried out for repeat trips. The aim is to better control the length of stay and combat fraud and misuse of documents and identity.

Member States will decide for themselves which points to introduce the system first, and it is expected that it will ease the work of border authorities and speed up the crossing.

Current information about the System is published on the EES website - Entry-Exit System (EES)
