18 injured after storms in southern Catalan province of Tarragona

18 people have been injured, one of them in serious condition, after storms in the southern Catalan province of Tarragona, BNR reported. 280 liters per square meter of rain were recorded in places.

The heavy rainfall caused rivers and ravines to overflow and the evacuation of over 1,000 people. There are no reports of casualties or missing persons so far. The rising water has destroyed bridges, roads and homes.

The regional prime minister of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, announced that the government would approve an initial aid package of 10 million euros in the form of subsidies and 50 million euros in the form of loans on preferential terms. More than 50,000 students will not be in their classrooms on Tuesday.

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Colboni has provided the Catalan government with the necessary emergency personnel, support and infrastructure to help the most affected municipalities.

Against this backdrop, the State Meteorological Agency has issued a red alert for heavy rains for the southern coast of Valencia. Forecasters are warning of thunderstorms, flash floods and river overflows.
