Russia has opened new criminal proceedings against Khodorkovsky - 1

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Monday it had opened new criminal proceedings against exiled Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

Khodorkovsky is accused of creating a "terrorist organization" and plotting to seize power by force.

The FSB said the charges were related to the activities of an organization supported by Khodorkovsky that opposes the war in Ukraine. The organization, which goes by the name "Anti-War Committee", is banned in Russia. There was no immediate comment from Khodorkovsky or his representatives.

Oil tycoon Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, served 10 years in a Siberian prison on fraud charges that he and many Western countries have said were politically motivated. He was pardoned in 2013 and left Russia. Since then, he has supported various organizations opposing the rule of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Khodorkovsky became a prominent figure as one of the wealthy businessmen who supported former Russian President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s and who consequently gained enormous influence over the Russian economy.

He fell out of favor when Yeltsin's successor as president, Putin, tightened the Kremlin's control over influential businessmen who had previously operated largely independently.

Since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in 2022, Khodorkovsky has positioned himself as a supporter of Ukraine. Shortly after the war began, Russia added him to its list of "foreign agents."
