Los Angeles County has declared a state of emergency to provide financial assistance to victims of actions by the federal immigration police (ICE), world agencies reported, quoted by BTA.
This unusual decision – a state of emergency is usually declared in the event of climate disasters – allows the county to provide financial assistance to tenants in economic hardship due to these actions.
It also allows for a moratorium on evictions of tenants and faster social, legal and financial assistance for immigrants affected by President Donald Trump's policies.
“We have entire families without money because their fathers and mothers have been detained in their jobs,“ said Janice Hahn, one of the county's leaders. For the Democrat, it is a response to “the fear, the suffering and the chaos caused by these actions“.
“I want our immigrant communities to know that we are with them in this emergency […] and that we understand what they are going through“, she said.
Supporters of this measure criticize the actions against illegal immigrants that have multiplied across the United States in recent months, especially in major cities controlled by the Democratic Party, from Chicago to Washington and Los Angeles.
The Trump administration categorically denies accusations of racial profiling.
Los Angeles was rocked in early June by clashes between police and protesters who condemned the government-ordered actions. Donald Trump responded by sending in the military to maintain order.
