Germany intends to order 15 more F-35 fighters from the American manufacturer Lockheed Martin, reports "Reuters" and "Spiegel".
This is clear from confidential documents prepared for the parliament's budget committee.
The additional order is listed among military projects, with planners estimating the budget needs for the new planes at 2.5 billion euros.
Germany has already ordered 35 of the US-made planes to renew its fleet of 85 aging Tornado fighters that are about to be decommissioned.
The F-35 fighters will replace the Tornado in its role as a carrier of US nuclear bombs stored in Germany in the event of a conflict.
Berlin previously denied having plans to acquire an additional 15 F-35 fighters in July, but a significantly expanded defense budget has since created more opportunities for weapons purchases.
At the time, a military source said that the idea of acquiring another 15 the F-35 fighter jet has been part of earlier discussions.
Any decision to buy more F-35s could spark new tensions between Germany and France, which are at odds over their FCAS fighter jet project, or SCAF in French.
