US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the future.
“We canceled a meeting with President Putin“, the American leader told reporters at the White House after his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. “It just didn't feel right. I didn't feel like we were going to achieve what we needed to. That's why I canceled it. But we will have it in the future.“
The Washington administration is open to meetings with Russian representatives if such contacts will contribute to resolving the conflict in Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Wednesday.
“We still want to meet with the Russian side,“ he said. “I had a good phone call with [Russian] Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. And we will continue to build on that,“ the secretary of state added. “We will always be interested in engaging if there is an opportunity to achieve peace,“ Rubio stressed, referring to the Ukraine agreement.
