A number of Palestinian factions have agreed to transfer interim governance of the Gaza Strip to an independent committee of technocrats, DPA reported, quoted by BTA, referring to a joint declaration issued today after a meeting of Palestinian organizations in Cairo.

The factions said they agreed that the committee would be tasked with managing basic services in the enclave "on the basis of transparency and national accountability" in cooperation with Arab countries and international institutions.

The declaration did not name the factions. However, media reports said they included representatives of the Islamist movement Hamas, which was at war with Israel for two years before the recent ceasefire, and its ally Islamic Jihad.

The groups called for a "continuation" of the US-backed ceasefire reached earlier this month, which envisages the creation of a Palestinian commission under international control to govern the devastated territory.

The factions also called for the adoption of a UN resolution on the planned deployment of international forces to monitor the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The statement, published on Hamas's official Telegram channel, did not mention contentious issues such as Hamas's disarmament and the exclusion of the armed group from political life in post-war Gaza, DPA notes.

The factions called for a meeting of all Palestinian groups to strengthen the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which was described as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.

Egyptian state television "Cahera News" reported earlier that delegations from "Hamas" and its rival "Fatah", the main faction in the PLO, had met in Cairo to discuss post-war agreements.
