The international airport in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, was closed again after several objects identified as possible helium balloons entered Lithuanian airspace, Reuters reported, citing the Lithuanian Crisis Management Center.

The border crossing points between Lithuania and Belarus were also closed.

This is the fourth such incident this week.

According to Lithuania, the balloons were sent by smugglers who illegally import cigarettes in this way. However, Lithuania also accuses Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, of doing nothing about the smuggling practice.

Vilnius Airport will remain closed until 23:40 GMT (1:40 a.m. Bulgarian time), while border crossings with Belarus will remain closed until a meeting of the country's National Security Commission, which will take place tomorrow.

Vilnius Airport was also closed on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, as well as on October 5, each time due to balloons entering the country's airspace, authorities said.

Border guards in southeastern Finland have recorded more than 50 minor border violations in the summer of 2025, including photos of the fence, reported Yle.

“Tourists come to see the fence on Finland's eastern border and take pictures next to it. This often happens in the border area, which is prohibited without special permission. The border guard in southeastern Finland has registered over 50 minor border violations in the summer of 2025“, writes the Yle website.

It is noted that frequent violators are foreign tourists vacationing in Finland. Usually such minor violations result in a fine.
