Italy allows extradition of Ukrainian suspected of Nord Stream attacks - 1

An Italian appeals court has ruled to extradite to Germany a Ukrainian citizen suspected of coordinating attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipeline, Reuters reports, citing the defendant's lawyer, BTA reports.

The defense has already said it will appeal the decision to Italy's Court of Cassation.

The man, identified only as Sergei K. under German privacy laws, was arrested in August in the Italian city of Rimini on a European arrest warrant.

According to a statement by German prosecutors published the same month, the suspect was part of a group that planted explosive devices on pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

The explosions in 2022 led to an almost complete disruption of Russian gas supplies to Europe, the agency recalls.
Ukraine categorically denies any involvement in the sabotage.

In September, the Bologna court had already issued an extradition order, but a higher court overturned it. The appeals court's decision now reopens the way for the suspect to be handed over to German authorities.
