Archaeologists from the National Museum of Unification in the Romanian city of Alba Iulia (Alba County) have excavated the ruins of the ancient Roman colony Aurelia Apulensis, reports the g4media.ro portal.

The ruins of the colony were discovered within the city limits during the preparation of the terrain for the construction of a bus depot. According to archaeologist Radu Ota, this site “is of unique value“ and is one of the largest in Europe. It is noted that scientists were able to find remains of houses and streets at the excavation site.

The colony Aurelia Apulensis was founded around 107-108 AD. during the reign of Emperor Trajan. The colony was considered the main center of Roman Dacia and was at one time the capital of the region.
