At least 22 killed in explosion and fire at Mexican store, 12 hospitalized

At least 22 people, including four children, died in a fire that broke out at a store in the northwestern Mexican city of Hermosillo, El Universal newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper, another 12 people suffered burns of varying degrees and were taken to hospital. The fire was reportedly caused by an explosion.

The newspaper, citing fire services, reported that the fire started at the entrance of the store, trapping many shoppers inside. The fire was contained and prevented from spreading to neighboring buildings.

Authorities in the state of Sonora have launched an investigation into the incident. Theories considered include a technical malfunction and the possible presence of flammable materials.

Regional Governor Alfonso Durazo expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and ordered assistance to the injured. Municipal authorities in Hermosillo canceled cultural events planned for the “Day of the Dead“ festival.
