The mayor of Uruapan in the Mexican state of Michoacan, Carlos Manso, was shot dead in the city center. Two people linked to the attack have been arrested, and a third was killed, Nova TV reports.
Michoacan has been among the most violent regions of Mexico for years, controlled by drug cartels that extort farmers. Manso, who became mayor in September 2024, often personally participated in security patrols and pushed for tougher measures against crime.
His murder is the latest in a series of attacks on local politicians in Mexico, where drug-related violence has continued for nearly two decades.
