Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Lisbon against changes in labor legislation proposed by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, BNR reported.

The protest was organized by the main trade union in the country as a sign of disagreement with the reforms that threaten the rights of workers. For example, it is easier to dismiss an employee by eliminating previous requirements for unilateral termination of the contract.

The government is submitting these proposals to parliament on the grounds that they will improve labor productivity and make the labor market more flexible. The bill is expected to be adopted with the support of the far-right party “Sega“.

Portugal is the "poor country" in Western Europe. According to official statistics, over 50% of workers earned less than 1,000 euros/month last year. Unions have demanded that the minimum wage be increased from 870 euros to 1,050 euros next year.

A general strike is planned in Portugal for December 11th.
