Police shoot man with knife at Montparnasse station in Paris - 1

Police in Paris have shot a man armed with a knife at Montparnasse station, the Paris prosecutor's office reported, quoted by Reuters and Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.

According to police sources, the man threatened his wife and children on the metro, then took a train to Montparnasse station, where police were waiting for him. When he tried to be arrested, he threatened to kill himself and was shot in the legs.

The man was known to police for domestic violence. The Paris fire department joined the operation, helping two injured people who were not in danger of life, and ambulances arrived at the scene in an emergency help.

A Reuters photographer who witnessed the incident said the police intervention caused a stir among passengers on the platform. Police then evacuated the station's concourse, which serves high-speed trains and routes to western and southwestern France.

A witness told BFM TV that he heard a loud gunshot and panic set in: "It took me two or three seconds to realise what was happening. People started saying, 'We have to get out of here', and then I ran away."

A spokesman for state-run railway company SNCF said rail traffic had only been slightly disrupted by the incident.
