US President Donald Trump said on Monday he had asked the Justice Department to investigate Jeffrey Epstein's alleged ties to the bank “J.P. Morgan“ and several prominent Democratic Party figures, including former President Bill Clinton, Reuters reported, BTA reports.
Trump's request followed the release of thousands of documents by a congressional committee that raised new questions about the president's relationship with the convicted sex offender.
In addition to Clinton, who befriended Epstein in the early 2000s, Trump said he had also asked for investigations of former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman, founder of “LinkedIn“ and a prominent Democratic donor.
“Epstein was a Democrat and he is a Democrats problem, not a Republican one! Everyone knows about him, don't waste your time with Trump. I have a country to run!“, the president wrote on social media.
The Justice Department has not yet commented on Trump's statements, and there has been no reaction from “J.P. Morgan“ and the other individuals mentioned.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll from October shows that while about 90% of Republicans approve of Trump's job performance overall, only 40% approve of his handling of the “Epstein“ affair.
