A magnitude 5.7 earthquake was registered in Bangladesh on Monday, Reuters reported, citing information from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), BTA reports.

The quake was 10 kilometers deep at its epicenter, the center said.

The earthquake was also felt in eastern states of neighboring India, but at this stage there is no information about significant damage, according to local authorities.

The United States Geological Survey indicates that the epicenter was near the city of Narsingdi, 40 kilometers east of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.

Residents of Dhaka rushed out of their homes in panic as buildings shook and some temporary structures collapsed, Reuters reported, citing witnesses.

“I have never experienced such an earthquake. We were in our office when the furniture started shaking. We rushed to the stairs to get out faster and saw that people were already gathered there“, said Sadman Sahib, an employee at a private company in Dhaka.

Local media published footage of people carrying children and helping elderly citizens quickly get out of their homes.
