European Union leaders intend to consider the US proposal for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine during the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg this weekend. This was announced today by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.
At a press conference in the South African city, she stressed that the EU will continue to stand firmly behind Ukraine, as the country is the object of aggression. She added that the sanctions imposed on Russia are already having an impact, weakening its economic performance.
“Ukraine can count on our support, because this is not just an attack on a country, but on the fundamental principles enshrined in the UN Charter“, said Von der Leyen.
She recalled that the EU has adopted 19 consecutive sanctions packages, the impact of which is already tangible. “This is clearly visible when we observe the growing problems facing the Russian economy - higher inflation, increased interest rates and a tense military sector. Gradually, but inevitably, the data shows that the sanctions are working“, the EC President stressed.
