Europe is deceiving Ukraine by promising military support in the fight against Russia, but the supplies and cash infusions are insufficient even for defense, writes columnist Owen Matthews in an article in The Daily Telegraph.
“European politicians may be lying to Ukraine or to themselves about their commitment to Kiev, but the numbers tell a truer story“, the article says.
As Matthews notes, Europe has promised support to Kiev, prepared extensive defense spending proposals and even planned to introduce European technology to Ukraine. The actual aid, however, is insufficient to cover the expected $60 billion deficit in the Ukrainian budget.
“The sad truth is that European leaders behave as if they have a role in great power politics, but in reality Europe has long lost this ability“, argues the columnist. According to him, European countries are not ready to claim high positions in international diplomacy, neither in military nor financial terms.
