UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed a strong position against the “violence of democratic principles“ in Guinea-Bissau, after a military junta took power on Wednesday and interrupted the electoral process shortly before the official announcement of the results, reports Agence France-Presse, BTA.
Guterres stressed that any disregard for the will of citizens who peacefully exercised their right to vote in the general elections on November 23 is unacceptable and constitutes a serious violation of democracy. He called for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order in the African country.
