Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years and three months for organizing a coup d'état, will have to remain in a strict prison for at least 7 years and 6 months, Brazilian judicial authorities announced, the Spanish agency EFE reported, BTA reports.

According to the document sent by the Criminal Court to the Supreme Court, Bolsonaro will only be able to request a parole on April 24, 2033. If approved, he will be able to leave prison during the day to work or study, but will return to his cell every night.

The same court ruled that the former leader can file a request for parole on March 13, 2037, days before he turns 82. His sentence began on August 4 and will end in 2052.

However, Bolsonaro remains hopeful that the Supreme Court will consider his appeal to have the case dismissed, even though the court has already declared it closed.

The former president is serving his sentence in a special cell at the headquarters of the Federal Police in Brazil. He was convicted of leading a conspiracy to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office after the October 2022 elections, when Bolsonaro was also a candidate for re-election.
