A Myanmar army airstrike on a teahouse in Myanmar's central Sagaing region killed at least 18 people and wounded 20 more, Myanmar's independent media reported, quoted by the Associated Press.
The attack took place on Friday evening last week in the village of Mayakan, Sagaing region. More than 20 houses near the teahouse were damaged.
The attack is the latest in a series of frequent and deadly airstrikes targeting pro-democracy forces ahead of Myanmar's upcoming elections later this month.
Myanmar has been in political turmoil since the military ousted the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1, 2021, sparking widespread unrest. After peaceful protests were violently suppressed, many opponents of the military junta have taken up arms, and large parts of the country are now embroiled in conflict, the AP notes.
