Nine Thai soldiers have been killed in renewed border clashes with Cambodia on Sunday, Agence France-Presse reported, citing a statement from the Defense Ministry in Bangkok today, BTA reported.

"A total of nine (our) soldiers have been killed so far," ministry spokesman Surasant Kongsiri said. The last death toll announced on the Thai side was 5, and now the total number of victims is already 19, AFP specifies.

Cambodian authorities clarified that among the 10 civilians killed was a child.

President Donald Trump, through whose mediation Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement in Malaysia in October, announced yesterday to reporters at the White House that he would talk to the leaders of both countries today.

At the same time, Cambodia called on the UN Security Council to intervene in the new border conflict, DPA reported.

In a letter to the presidency of the council, the Cambodian permanent representative to the UN called for pressure to be put on the Thai army to "immediately cease all attacks" and to authorize an independent fact-finding commission on the ground.

The letter describes the actions of the Thai military as a "violation of international humanitarian law".
