A Toyota Estima car fell through the ice of the Lena River in Yakutsk while driving in an unauthorized area near a point for discharging wastewater into the riverbed.

According to preliminary data, there were eight people in the car, five of whom saved themselves, and three, including a child, remained in the car.

Divers from the Yakutia rescue service have been sent, and a psychologist from the Russian Emergencies Ministry is working with the victims. According to the mayor of Yakutsk, Yevgeny Grigoriev, one victim was evacuated with frostbite and hypothermia.

“The body of one of the victims from the sunken car was found today on the shore of an ice hole”, the Telegram channel of the Yakutia rescue service reported. According to the source, the victim is a man of about 60 years old. He managed to swim to the surface, but was unable to get out,“ the report said.

According to preliminary data, two people remained in the sunken car, including a child. Divers continue to descend into the water to search for them. The temperature in Yakutsk is -44 degrees Celsius.
