Rubio: We have not abandoned NATO, we have started technical talks on Greenland - 1

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the department has started technical talks between the United States of America, Denmark and Greenland regarding US President Donald Trump's interest in the Danish territory, TASS reports.

Rubio added that a “professional process“ has been established, which should lead to a “good outcome for everyone“.

He told the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee that while he was addressing senators, technical-level meetings with partners from Greenland and Denmark were underway or being prepared, assessing that the process would be regular, professional and conducted without excessive media attention.

"We want to do this without turning every conversation into a media spectacle, because that leaves more room for flexibility and a positive outcome "on both sides," the secretary of state said.

Rubio reiterated that he believes the talks will lead to a positive solution and added that he expects similar messages from European partners in the near future.

He reiterated that the US president's interest in Greenland is “clear“ and that it is a matter of national security.

The United States is not abandoning NATO, but it plans to reassess its power position in the world. This was stated by Rubio, quoted by TASS.

"We are not abandoning NATO or Europe", he said at a hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"We intend to reconfigure our forces around the world at some point to respond to the realities of the world", the US Secretary of State emphasized.

"The stronger our allies are, the more capabilities our NATO allies have, the more flexibility we have. We are not abandoning our commitments, we are not reducing our presence. We will continue to deploy the largest military contingents in the world. We will be in Europe with our allies, but over time we will need the flexibility to do so", he added.

The United States does not rule out conducting a military operation against Iran. This was confirmed by the US Secretary of State, Sky News reported.

"I think it is wise and prudent to ensure such a balance of power in the region that allows us to react and potentially, but this does not necessarily happen, to preemptively thwart an attack on thousands of American service members and facilities in the region, as well as on our allies. I hope it does not come to that“, he said at hearings in the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, commenting on Washington's military preparations regarding Iran.

Rubio stressed that Washington still intends to continue increasing its military presence in the Middle East, in particular in Iran.

"Now you see the ability (of the United States) to deploy forces in the region to protect itself from a possible Iranian threat“, said the head of the US State Department.
