Former first lady Jill Biden's first husband has been charged with murdering his wife at their Delaware home in late December, authorities said in a news release, The Associated Press reported.
William Stevenson, 77, of Wilmington, was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975.
Caroline Harrison, a spokeswoman for the Delaware Attorney General, confirmed by phone that Stevenson is Jill Biden's ex-husband.
Jill Biden declined to comment, according to an emailed response from a spokeswoman for the former president and first lady's office.
Stevenson remains in jail after failing to post $500,000 bail after his arrest Monday on a charge of first-degree murder. He is accused of killing 64-year-old Linda Stevenson on Dec. 28.
Police were called to the home after a report of a domestic dispute after 11 p.m. and found a woman unconscious in the living room, according to a previous news release. Attempts to provide first aid were unsuccessful.
Stevenson was indicted by a grand jury after weeks of investigation by detectives from the Delaware Department of Justice.
It is unclear whether Stevenson has an attorney.
Jill Biden married U.S. Senator Joe Biden in 1977.
