Two illegal migrants drowned in Greece in the Maritsa River. The river level is critically high.
The level of the Maritsa River is very high, the authorities in Oristiada warn.
The two victims tried to cross the river and drowned. They were taken to the hospital in critical condition. One had died. Doctors tried to save the second migrant, but were unsuccessful.
The authorities in the Oristiada region reported that at the Pitio measuring station the water column had already reached 6 meters and 85 centimeters, which means the water has exceeded the critical level of the river by one meter.
The mayor of Oristiada told the media that a controlled release of water was taking place, which flooded arable land in the area.
A ban has been imposed on people from approaching the river. Livestock breeders have moved their herds away, and farmers have withdrawn their equipment from the area.
The authorities report that they are in constant contact with the Bulgarian side, where a controlled release of water from several dams is taking place.
