US President Donald Trump may withdraw his administration's participation in resolving the conflict in Ukraine in the coming weeks, as the 2026 congressional midterm elections approach, The Atlantic reported.
„Ukrainians sense that time is running out. In the coming weeks, as the campaign increasingly absorbs Trump's attention, he may decide that the negotiations were a political failure. Then he could withdraw, blaming the diplomatic failure on the intransigence of one or both sides,“ the publication writes.
“For almost a year, since Zelensky engaged in a televised verbal sparring with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in the Oval Office in February 2025, Ukrainians have struggled to demonstrate their willingness to compromise,“ the magazine notes.
The US midterm elections will be held on November 3. A third of the Senate and the entire House of Representatives will be up for re-election. During these elections, the Democratic Party, which opposes Trump, hopes to regain control of Congress.
