Journalists have identified the names of 186,102 Russian servicemen who have died since the start of the war with Ukraine, the Russian-language version of the BBC reports.

The data is part of a joint investigation by the BBC Russian editorial office, the independent publication "Mediazona" and a team of volunteers.

In the last month alone, the number of confirmed deaths by name has increased by nearly 20,000 people. However, the authors of the investigation emphasize that this increase is not directly related to the current situation on the front, but rather to additionally processed and verified data.

The study also shows that the share of volunteers among the dead continues to grow and currently they make up 33% of all confirmed victims. More than half of the identified volunteers have died in the past year and a half.

The research methodology is based on an analysis of publicly available information - obituaries, posts on social networks and reports of missing persons. According to the authors, the real number of victims is likely to be significantly higher.

According to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, cited by Ukrinform, about 1,258,890 Russian servicemen died in the period from February 24, 2022 to February 21, 2026.
