US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said on the social network X that the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, leader of the Mexican drug cartel “New Generation Jalisco“ (CJNG), is “a great event“.
“I have just been informed that Mexican security forces have eliminated El Mencho, one of the bloodiest and most ruthless drug lords. This is a great event for Mexico, the United States, Latin America and the world,” Landau wrote.
He noted that “the good guys have turned out to be stronger than the bad guys.”
The Undersecretary of State also congratulated Mexico’s law enforcement agencies.
On February 22, mass unrest erupted in at least five Mexican states after reports of the killing of El Mencho. According to the Mexican Ministry of National Defense, the drug lord was seriously injured during a special operation. He died while being airlifted to a hospital in Mexico City.
The state of Jalisco has become the epicenter of the unrest. On Sunday morning, a federal operation was carried out in the municipality of Tapalpa. In response to the actions of security forces, members of a drug cartel blocked highways. Car fires and roadblocks were reported in the state capital Guadalajara, Tala, Tapalpa and the resort city of Puerto Vallarta.
