Marines fire on protesters storming US consulate in Karachi (VIDEO) - 1

US Marines guarding the US consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, fired on protesters who tried to storm the embassy building during a spontaneous protest, Reuters reported, citing US officials.

Previously, it was reported that 10 protesters were killed and over 40 were hospitalized during an attempted attack on the consulate in Karachi. Sources of the publication note that it remains unclear whether the actions of the marines led to the deaths or injuries of the protesters. It is also not clear whether employees of a private security company or police fired.

According to the agency, the comments of the officials are the first confirmation from the American side that the marines participated in the shooting of protesters. The use of weapons by the marines emphasizes how seriously the employees of the diplomatic mission took the threat to security during the unrest. In addition, the agency adds, the incident could dramatically escalate the situation in the country.

A video clip has been circulated on social media, allegedly showing the incident at the US consulate in Karachi. It shows a participant in the attack shooting at the diplomatic mission, possibly with a firearm, and sounds of return fire can be heard from inside the complex. Karachi police confirmed to the agency that the return fire came from the diplomatic mission. The Pentagon and the State Department did not respond to the agency's inquiries.

At least 25 people were killed during protests against the US and Israeli military operation against Iran that took place in Pakistan on March 1. In response to the unrest, Pakistani authorities imposed a curfew in several regions.
