At least 23 people have died, flights have been grounded and military units have been deployed after streets in Kenya's capital Nairobi were flooded by overnight heavy rains.

Some of the people drowned and others died from electrocution, local police said, warning that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.

Police chief George Seda also said more than 100 vehicles had been damaged. The heavy rains began yesterday and continued throughout the night, leaving many cars submerged. In some areas, drivers were forced to wade through waist-deep water to reach higher ground.

The military was mobilized to assist rescue services, and the local toll operator waived tolls on some sections of the road.

Kenya Airways said flights to and from Nairobi had been temporarily suspended, with some diverted to the coastal city of Mombasa, with disruptions expected for the next few hours.
