Despite the widespread belief that a confrontation between Israel, the United States, and Iran would potentially benefit Russia, there is a risk of negative geopolitical consequences for Moscow, writes The National Interest.
The article argues that even if Tehran’s defeat brings Russia temporary economic relief due to rising oil prices, it would also damage its reputation, as Iran is an ally.
The author believes that Moscow could also face a deterioration in its relations with the Persian Gulf countries, especially if US intelligence reports are confirmed that Russia is providing Iran with intelligence on attacks on US troops based in region.
According to the author, the apparent economic gain can turn into strategic losses.
“In fact, Russia is paying for a temporary influx of petrodollars by destroying its positions in the Middle East“, the journalist concludes.
