US federal prosecutors have subpoenaed former FBI Director James Comey as part of their investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, NBC News reported, citing sources.

In August 2025, US Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered an investigation into allegations related to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, the television network reported.

According to the media, more than 130 subpoenas have been issued. Subpoenas allow prosecutors to request documents or testimony from their recipients, NBC News explained.

Fox News previously reported that a grand jury in the Southern District of Florida had issued subpoenas in the case of alleged Russian interference to former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.

In July 2015, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard released a report concluding that the administration of Democrat Barack Obama, following Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 presidential election, had essentially fabricated intelligence on Russian interference in the election process.

According to her, several months before the election, US intelligence was unanimous that Russia had neither the intention nor the ability to interfere.

However, in December 2016, the administration of Obama ordered a new report that contradicted previous assessments.

Gabbard explained that the key intelligence conclusion that Russia did not influence the outcome of the election had been removed and classified.
