Trump boasts he has halted the execution of eight Iranian women, Tehran denies death sentences against women - 1

Iran will not execute eight women who participated in the protests that swept the Islamic Republic last winter, US President Donald Trump announced on TruthSocial.

“Great news! I have just been informed that the eight female protesters scheduled for execution tonight in Iran will no longer be executed,“ he wrote.

According to Trump, four women will be released immediately, while the other four will each receive a month in prison. The US President expressed gratitude to the Iranian authorities for their decision and for the attention paid to his request.

The Hill, citing human rights organizations, reports that the women were accused of helping injured demonstrators during the protests and throwing objects. The news of the pardon, the publication notes, comes against the backdrop of the ongoing ceasefire and discussions about possible new negotiations between the US and Iran.

At the end of last year, large-scale protests broke out in Iran over the country's economic situation. At least 2,000 people died during the unrest, with estimates varying. Iranian authorities have restricted access to the internet in the country. Tehran has accused the US and Israel of organizing the protests.

The Fars Agency earlier rejected as false Trump's claim that Iran planned to execute eight women detained during the protests. According to the agency, some of them were released before the US president's announcement, while others received charges that do not carry the death penalty.
